In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, an increasing number of individuals are reporting discomfort such as upper back pain, neck pain, and headaches – a prevalent concern in my office. The shift to remote work or adopting hybrid schedules has undoubtedly altered our daily routines, with many now working from ergonomically designed home offices.
You may be thinking, “I’ve set up my home office well – a comfortable chair, a properly positioned monitor, even a sit-to-stand desk.” While these adjustments are commendable, there’s one critical change: the lack of movement.
Our bodies aren’t designed to remain stationary; they crave motion. I often tell my patients that “MOTION IS LOTION” for our joints. Despite the flexibility that comes with working from home, we’ve unintentionally eliminated movements we once took for granted. In the past, our commutes or walks to work, the lunch breaks, the casual conversations with colleagues – these activities kept our bodies in motion.
It’s vital to recognize that even with a well-set-up home office, the body still needs regular movement. As we usher in the New Year, consider the phrase “motion is lotion” for our joints. Take a moment each day to stretch and move. Remember, your body thrives when it’s not confined to a single position.
Embrace the advantages of working from home, but don’t forget the simple yet effective habit of moving regularly. Your body will thank you, and you’ll be nurturing a healthier, more resilient you for the days ahead.
